From the National Gallery of Art: “Rothko’s work is characterized by rigorous attention to formal elements such as color, shape, balance, depth, composition, and scale; yet, he refused to consider his paintings solely in these terms.”

What a load of shite.

I have questions. What exactly is the allure of a Mark Rothko painting? What interests a person enough to value it? Do Rothko enjoyers just stares at the edges of the “colour fields”?
