REVISITING A DECADE-OLD VISION

US/ In 1974, Nelson Stevens wanted to turn black neighborhoods into outdoor galleries. To bring this vision to life, in 1974, Stevens and his team started creating murals on the streets of Springfield’s black neighborhoods, which continued for many years. Thirty-six murals in total were created.

And now, in 2023, months after Stevens’ death in July of 2022, the project he started is being continued. This project involves the restoration of the murals created by Stevens. Members of the neighborhood are invested in the project, and many have contributed to moving things along.

The display is full of large, vibrant works reflecting Nelson’s art creation philosophy.
